MIL-C-62326B
3.3 Performance.
*
3.3.1 Speed. The vehicle shall transport the minimum payload over smooth, level, hard
surfaces at speeds up to 20 miles per hour (mph).
*
3.3.2 Temperature variance. The vehicle shall operate in ambient air temperatures of
plus 120 degrees Fahrenheit (ºF) to minus 65°F. When in storage, the vehicle shall withstand
climatic extremes as specified in MIL-STD-210, without deterioration that could cause failure of
any component part of the vehicle.
*
3.3.3 Obstacles. With the minimum payload specified in table I, the vehicle shall climb,
either in a head-on or diagonal approach, a vertical barrier 10 inches in height. The vehicle shall
ford streams and open water up to 14 inches deep.
3.3.4 Climbing ability. With the minimum payload specified in table I, the vehicle shall
climb a hard surface grade of not less than 75 percent without stalling or damaging the power
plant or running gear. Side hill ability shall be not less than 55 percent on hard surface grades.
3.3.5 Turning radius. The carrier shall be capable of short radius turns to the right and
left which shall be not more than a radius of 10 feet, as measured from the pivot point to the
inside edge of the inner track.
3.4 Chassis components.
*
3.4.1 Engine. The intermittent brake horsepower and speed rating of the engine shall be
in excess of that required to meet the operational requirements of the vehicle. The engine shall
be an air- or a water-cooled, four-stroke cycle, gasoline type of not less than 120 horsepower.
The engine shall be of a commercial design that has been proven satisfactory in extensive use,
and for which repair parts are readily obtainable. The cooling system shall be such that the
engine will operate satisfactorily in ambient temperatures between minus 65°F and plus 120°F.
The engine shall have not less than six cylinders and not less than a 258 cubic inch displacement.
Engine hood insulation shall be provided to decrease heat transfer from the engine compartment
to the driver. Insulation shall be standard type used in automobiles and trucks; carpet; or a
combination thereof. The design of the insulation shall take into account any potential fire
hazard. The engine shall be complete with all accessories normally furnished with the engine,
including a fuel filter located between the fuel tank and the carburetor. A hand throttle sufficient
to run the engine steadily at any set speed from idle to maximum shall be furnished. A speed
limiting system which provides engine overspeed protection shall be furnished.
